South Australian boat Special Permit trainer
1. Be eligible. At least 12 but not yet 16, with a parent or guardian's consent. The permit runs until the day before your 16th birthday, then you upgrade to the full licence.
2. Book the theory test. Call 13 10 84 and sit it at a Service SA centre (9:30am to 4pm weekdays; Elizabeth and Marion also do Saturdays). Bring proof of identity and age.
3. Pass it. Part A (navigation rules, signal recognition and alcohol limits) must be 100%. Parts B and C need 75%.
4. Lodge the application at a Service SA centre within 6 months of passing, or the pass lapses.
5. Practical test (only if you want to go out without supervision). Free, with a Marine Safety Officer, in a registered boat under 4 m that cannot exceed 10 knots. Test locations: Ardrossan, Garden Island, Goolwa, Murray Bridge, Port Lincoln, Robe, Streaky Bay, Waikerie, Wallaroo.
Fees from 1 July 2026: theory test $25 each attempt · permit issue $22 · practical test free.
